MIKE RAMOS
Artist NMJ
Nicasio Ramos "Mike Ramos" was born on a day like today, November 8, 1934 in Bayamón, Puerto Rico. A brilliant dancer and choreographer, he lived in the era of the "big bands", the mambo explosion and the development of great Latin stars.
"Mike" made his way, no less, at the famous Palladium club in New York... today, at his agile 85 years, he continues to relive that era of glory in every step he takes, now as part of the dance duo Palladium Mambo Legends, which he forms together with Freddie Rios...
Ríos was, curiously enough, the first dancer with whom she formed a couple in the Big Apple, where she moved when she was about 12 years old. While studying and dreaming of being famous and meeting the stars of the time, Mike invented mambo steps, alone or with Rios, in front of the mirror of a company where they had a part-time job as messengers...
Later, his talent caught the attention of Carlos (Charlie) Arroyo and he invited him to join the group Cha Cha Taps, which was one of the attractions that performed every Wednesday at the Palladium. The rest is history...Mike speaks of such musical glories as Tito Puente, Frank "Machito" Grillo, Damaso Perez Prado and Tito Rodriguez with a familiarity that can only be understood by hearing how close he was to all of them at the famed club. He also recalls Tony Bennett, Frank Sinatra and Bob Hope, with whom he traveled to India, as stage partners...However, when he points out who he took particular joy in meeting, he doesn't hesitate to remember the Nicholas Brothers. "The greatest. They were two blacks who danced incredible", exclaims the dancer when referring to the duo of African Americans who seemed to float when tap dancing...When asked which of all the artists he accompanied became his friend, he mentions Sammy Davis Jr. "He was tremendous", he recalls, who also joined the group Mambo Aces, with Aníbal Vázquez...
